Get ready, folks. Mid City is going to be the place to be!

Published 19 March 2014 at 9:58 am

As the result of an agreement recently completed with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and approval by the Metro Council, Holden announced that Government Street will be redesigned from four lanes to three lanes with a continuous two-way left-turn lane and a dedicated bicycle lane.

The project will cover Government Street from I-110 to Lobdell Avenue and is esti8manted to cost between $6 and $8 million, with 100% of the cost coming from the state funds.

“I've always believed if there are problems with traffic flow or safety, the public doesn't care if it's a state or local road -- they just want if fixed,” Holden said, “That's why with both the Green Light Program and this transfer, our goal has been to address our most critical needs.”

Holden said a condition of accepting the roads was to assure the state funds intended for their maintenance were also transferred. He Acknowledged that the State agreed to put the roads in good condition and provide 40 years of maintenance funds in the form of construction dollars.

“I can't think of a better place to start than with a road I believe will make a major difference in revitalizing Mid-City as envisioned in our FUTUREBR master plan,” said Holden

Holden explained that the transfer of Government Street from I-110 to Jefferson Highway included a complete rehab and overlay, while the City-Parish already maintains Government Street from Jefferson Highway to Lobdell Avenue.

“Today, I am committing to convert Government Street to three lanes with a dedicated left-turn lane and a dedicated bike lane all the way from I-110 to Lobdell Avenue using the state construction dollars we will receive,”, he said.

According to state cash reports, Government Street typically sees 270 crashes a year between the interstate and Jefferson Highway, most of them rear end or left turn crashes and side swipes. Holden said he expects the redesign will greatly reduce these crashes as has been the case throughout the U.S.

Government Street from the intestate to Lobdell currently caries about 24,00 vehicles a day. With numerous driveways and cross-streets, one lane in each direction is often blocked by left-turning vehicles waiting for the gap to make their turns.

Holden said the project would get underway immediately with construction starting by the end of 2014 or early 2015 and completed by the end of 2015.

“A big difference will be the dedicated bike lane,” Holden said, “and this is something I'm especially pleased to announce to help improve safety for our growing number of bicyclists on the roads. I believe these improvements will bring an exciting new energy to one of Baton Rouge's truly great streets, a unique shopping district and the neighbourhood that surrounds it.”
